One of the most notorious figures to ever be held financially liable for the loss of another is O.J. Simpson. He was a former football star, an actor and sports broadcaster who, in 1995, was found not guilty on criminal charges stemming from the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman, who was an acquaintance, in a suburb just outside of Los Angeles.
After a grueling, drawn out trial, O.J. Simpson was found not guilty by jurors in this closely watched and televised criminal trial. It ranks as the longest criminal case in United States history. Following the criminal trial, Simpson was sued for damages in civil court by the Brown and Goldman families for the wrongful death of their loved ones. In 1997, the families were awarded damages in the amount of $33.5 million. Simpson later appealed that award and was successful in lowering the compensatory damages. To date, the families report they have received little or no funds from O.J. Simpson for the damages of the wrongful death judgment.
